What is this about?
The aim of this project is to design the next generation of media center for the home, including designing the hardware and software for the device. This device will be marketed to the consumer looking to replace their dvd recorder or VHS, and should be priced initially around £500.00.
Hardware
The hardware will fit inside a shallow box equivalent in size to today’s slim line DVD recorders. Included will be a proprietary motherboard, whose design will be shared with manufacturers to improve upon, manufacture and sell. The hardware should not produce any audible sound, nor should it give off excessive heat. All other component should be off the shelf and easily upgradeable by enthusiasts.
A new wireless input device will be designed to be wearable, allowing the user to interact completely with the OS.
Software
The operating system will be Linux. A new GUI will replace KDE and GIMP to provide the simplest access to applications using intuitive navigation, including multiview, infinity ribbons and other funcitonality brainstormed in the Next Generation GUI posts here on Mollerade.com.
The following applications will be bundled with the new OS.
Internet Browser –Firefox with unique Theme
Email - Thunderbird
Photos - Google Picasa
Movies – To be Determined (edit and play) VLC for Play
Music – iTunes, WMP, and Open source options
Office Apps – Open Office
